This impressive anniversary showcase of approximately 120 works included paintings, sculpture, mixed media, photography, prints, and installation art. Artists ranged from the renowned, including Jasper Johns, Alex Katz, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Frank Stella, to regionally acclaimed rising stars, such as Carolyn Carr, John Folsom, Zoe Hersey, and Rocío Rodríguez.
Opening the show was Louise Nevelson’s black-painted wood Untitled (1976–78). The breadth of the offerings could be seen in the juxtaposition of Sandy Skoglund’s The Cocktail Party (1992), which features Cheez Doodle–covered furniture, wall panels, and floors, with two Johns intaglios, Face with Watch (1996) and The Seasons (1990). Nearby, Robert Rauschenberg’s Epic (Ground Rules), 1997, and Soviet/American Array VI (1990) confronted Cindy Sherman peering over her sunglasses in her self-portrait Untitled (1994).
Around the corner were two eye-catching glazed ceramic figures by Jun Kaneko. Crafted ten years apart, they nevertheless matched perfectly with their zebralike lines. Rodríguez’s Booty (2005), a geometric abstraction of fluid shapes set far apart on the canvas, contrasted with Hersey’s Acacias (2005), a warm-toned, soft-edged portrayal of wilting blossoms. Closing the show was George Segal’s ghostly cast sculpture Man on a Bench (1985), poised to ponder the satisfying variety of works brought together for this celebration. —Kirsten Ott
